WHY STANDARD ENGLISH?

Image
What is Standard English? Standard English is accepted as the "correct" form of English, used in formal speaking or writing. In primary school children are expected to learn to write according to the rules of Standard English.                                                               Standard English is the variety of English which is used, with minor regional and national variations, as a world language.  The aim of the national curriculum is that everyone should be able to use Standard English as needed in writing and in relatively formal speaking. Standard English may also be referred to as 'correct' English. It follows grammatical rules like subject-verb agreement and the correct use of  verb tenses  or  pronouns , for example: Are children tested on their unders...

Mehmet Ali Erkasap English as a Foreign Language

Assessment and Evaluation in Foreign Language Teaching Discussion Report English as a Foreign Language   In this report, I will express my ideas and thoughts about English as a Foreign Language and give feedback of the discussion that we made in the classroom. Before starting my feedback, I want to say thank you for giving us an opportunity to make a discussion. We simultaneously experienced an alternative assessment method and I was pleased with it academically. And also, I want to emphasize that I strongly support English as a Foreign Language against English as Lingua Franca in teaching language. To begin with, English as a Lingua Franca has been becoming popular around the world. This is because of variety of the speakers. There are some researchers who support ELF because of the diversity of human population. They say that English should be taught according to non-native speakers and as long as there is intelligibility, some mistakes and wrong structures sho...

my personal ideas about standart english

Some advantages of Standard English ; 1-       Standard English is being used in formal situations. -           It is difficult to imagine that a member of parliament speaking with the little known Accent. -           As being  English,  in Turkish imagine that when we talk to anybody who has higher statü like rector or president.  We try to be careful about choosing the way we speak. 2-       Standart English  is easier to learn and understand . You cant understand easily Indian English but you can understand Standart English better. It has some rules grammatically and orally in pronunciation. It doesn’t change . Whereever you go , you learn the standart version of English  in schools. 3-       It is easier to translation. You can translate accurately Standart English to your own ...
“ELF vs EFL” SİDE : Standard English Team Member : İlayda Ertan What is standard English? It is an official form of language. This kind of form of languages are artificially modified at least to some degree. The core idea of the standard language is to codify a public , particularly written language so that it is accessible to every speaker of the language to be used in education , media, science, newspapers and public speechs . A common way to create Standard Language is to promote one dialect to this position. What ı defend for this issue in this debate is ; using Standard Language as a teacher in our clasrooms and in business as an employer and jobseeker. I am of the opinion that without truth none of us can be aware of our mistakes. In real life and nearly in all parts we have the sense of right and wrong. According to the right things we correct our mistakes so do our students.  What ı mean is without a Standard English teaching language would be very had in many ...

EFL or ELF - ELT Debate Report

What is English as a Lingua Franca ?      English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) refers to the use of English as a medium of communication between peoples of different languages.   We include as potential ELF users both those who speak English as an additional language and those who speak English (in any of its social, regional and national varieties) as their main language. So, if you are speaking English with another student who speaks English as an additional language, whether or not English is your main language, you are both using ELF.      ELF has been studied by linguists interested in how its grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation is different from other varieties of English ( Seidlhofer 2005 ). Other linguists have focused on ELF as a process, rather than a product; noticing how speakers in multilingual situations are able to monitor each other's response and work out the grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, rate of speaking, volume, ge...

ELT Debate - ELF or EFL

ELF or EFL “Consequently, for the uninitiated Italian student, EFL and ELF could mean one and the same thing, but it should be made clear that in the Italian language learning environment at least, the "variety" taught is only one, and more importantly, not necessarily "the one" they will encounter in other non-native speakers of English from other nations.”(1) While we are speaking, words come out from our mouth like the water flows in a river. It flows smoothly and finds its way easily. But what happens when a tree goes down on that river and cuts the way? The water again finds it way but this time it is hampered and cripp...

English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) is interesting for researchers, but not important for teachers and learners

ELT DEBATE SESSION DETAILS: English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) is interesting for researchers, but not important for teachers and learners    As English has become the global lingua franca, there has been a lot of discussion of, and investigation into, the varied ways in which it is spoken around the world, and by different groups of speakers. But is such variation in English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) relevant to the ELT classroom?       Many who teach business communication observe gradual changes in Standard English. As do other languages, English changes through contact with other languages and through several other well-understood avenues of language evolution, such as compounding, adding affixes, functional shift, coinage, and so on. If this goes on, there wont be a...
