What is standard English?
It is an official form of language. This kind of form of languages are artificially modified at least to some degree. The core idea of the standard language is to codify a public , particularly written language so that it is accessible to every speaker of the language to be used in education , media, science, newspapers and public speechs . A common way to create Standard Language is to promote one dialect to this position.
What ı defend for this issue in this debate is ; using Standard Language as a teacher in our clasrooms and in business as an employer and jobseeker.
I am of the opinion that without truth none of us can be aware of our mistakes. In real life and nearly in all parts we have the sense of right and wrong. According to the right things we correct our mistakes so do our students. What ı mean is without a Standard English teaching language would be very had in many phase of the lesson . Without a standard usage or standard pronunciation how can we correct our students mistakes even basic and most simple ones. According to what ? İmagine that you are teaching your students the subject Modals. What does ‘Should’ mean , in a sentence like “ You should arrive home at 6 “.? Obligation ? Moral pressure ? Which one is the rigth usage of this modal for you or for the others . This is not just related to mistakes of course it is also valid in their language acquisition process. So especially in written language, grammar and also pronunciation+ we need Standard Language by our side.
There are many benefits of speaking English with clarity and with the rigth pronunciation and intonation. My second argument for defending standard language is business aspect and related to being successful in the internationsl arena . International business is using English increasingly as aglobal language of business. Academis and business research over the past decade has proven that those who speak the widely accepted standard English with confidence and distinction are perceived to be better educated and even more intelligent than those who not . People who are capable of speking confidently and demonstrating their grasp of the English language have a better chance of a successful professional life. İmagine that you are going to an interview for a job. Who is likelier to get the job ıf one of them speaks English in a clearer, more expressive and confident manner ? In a communication failure for not to be misunderstood also what do you going to say ? Or what they going to say you ? Could you repeat ? Did you mean ? Did you want to say ...? . I definetly dont think so ! . Asking and answering these questions several time is totally waste of time for employer or even in a daily talk many people regret to have that kind of communication.
Many multi nationals prefer well spoken stuff. In turism for example they say “Staying with good standard English will hold the problems to minimum”. Even in the United Kingdom large corparate companies including multi nationals and banks , send some of their executives and some formalised English speech with the intention of blostering communication skills and enhancing their business image. Inevitably some of us may want to go for higher education overseas or perhaps even attend high level business or diplomatic meeting overseas. The need tospeak English clarity becomes absolutely necessary . So again you are more marketable in the International arena with your standard English including clarity, confidence .. etc
As a conclusion within a Standard English we cannot only develop the daily basic communication between us and others we also develop ourselves . So we can say it is a self improvement . And the ability to speak English with clarity and expressively does not mean a loss of cultural identity . Students and professionals who acquire the skills to speak English with clarity are at a distinct advantage and ıf you are well trained and have the tools 4o speak Standard English with confidence then you are more likely to be succsuccessful at your job and career.
